Life of Priest

Father Daniel Brandenburg, LC, is a priest, author, and collaborator with Tabella who shared his incredible journey of faith, calling, and ministry on this episode of Life of a Priest. As a Legionary of Christ, Father Daniel has faced profound challenges and joys, living out his vocation as a "wounded healer" who brings Christ's grace to a broken world.
A Life Rooted in Faith
Father Daniel grew up in the farmlands of Iowa, the fourth of eight children in a devout Catholic family. Despite challenges and imperfections, his parents cultivated a strong spiritual foundation, praying the Rosary daily and instilling in their children a love for God and His Church.
“My family wasn’t perfect,” Father Daniel shares, “but God works through brokenness. He brings grace into the dark places when we trust in Him.”
His father’s miraculous healing from a diving accident deeply impacted the family’s faith, inspiring them to embrace a vibrant spiritual life that included the charismatic renewal and Marian devotion.
It was in this environment that the seeds of Father Daniel’s priestly vocation were planted. At just five years old, he approached his dad and said, “I think God wants me to be a priest.”
Following the Call
During his teenage years, the idea of the priesthood remained a persistent undercurrent despite his full engagement in high school life, dating, and extracurricular activities.
At 17, a brochure from the Legionaries of Christ struck a chord in his heart and reignited the embers of a call to the priesthood. He was captivated by their Christ-centered spirituality, rigorous formation, and mission to empower laypeople to live out their faith boldly.
After visiting their seminary in Cheshire, Connecticut, Father Daniel felt an immediate sense of belonging. “It was a community of real men, deeply committed to Christ and His Church,” he recalls.
In 1993, Father Daniel entered the novitiate, embracing the Legion’s challenging yet rewarding path of formation. Despite moments of doubt and difficulty, he was ordained in 2007, ready to serve as a priest of Jesus Christ.
A Priest’s Journey Through Trials
Shortly after his ordination, Father Daniel faced one of the most challenging moments of his life when the double life of the Legion’s founder, Father Marcial Maciel, came to light.
“It was a time of existential crisis,” Father Daniel admits. “I asked myself, ‘What am I doing here? Am I part of something false?’”
In the depths of this struggle, Father Daniel turned to prayer. Before the Blessed Sacrament, he recalled the reasons he joined the Legion—Jesus’ call, the authentic brotherhood, and the mission of the Legionaries. These truths brought clarity and peace.
This crisis of faith also brought renewal. “The scandal forced us to focus entirely on Christ,” Father Daniel explains. “We became humbler and more reliant on God’s grace.”
Living as a Wounded Healer
Today, Father Daniel lives out his priesthood as a “wounded healer,” embracing his brokenness and using it to bring Christ’s healing to others.
He serves in Georgia, where no two days are alike. Whether celebrating Mass, hearing confessions, offering spiritual direction, or preaching retreats, Father Daniel’s ministry is a testament to his trust in God’s grace and mission.
“My role is to be a lighthouse,” he says. “To point others to safe harbor, away from the rocks, and to Christ’s saving love.”
A Message for Parents and the Discerning
Father Daniel’s story is a powerful reminder that God calls us through our imperfections. To parents, he offers this encouragement: “You don’t need to have it all figured out. Trust in God’s grace. Vocations often arise from families that are far from perfect.”
For young people discerning their call, his advice is simple: “Don’t be afraid. Yes, there are challenges, but the priesthood is a life of deep joy and fulfillment when centered on Christ.”
An Invitation to Encounter
Father Daniel’s journey underscores the beauty of building relationships with priests and embracing the fullness of the Church as one family. “The priesthood isn’t about the man,” he says. “It’s about Christ working through the man to bring grace, healing, and hope to the world.”
Let Father Daniel’s story inspire you to grow closer to your priest, pray for vocations, and seek Christ’s call in your life. Share this story with someone who needs encouragement, and join us in praying for the wounded healers of our Church who lead us ever closer to Christ. 🙏
