During the month of June, the Church invites us into a profound mystery of divine love — the back-to-back feasts of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. These aren’t just dates on the liturgical calendar; they are invitations to participate in the burning, tender, and victorious love of Jesus and His Mother.

Let’s dive into the origins of these beautiful feasts, and how they call us deeper into prayer and transformation. And don’t forget — we’ve created two powerful playlists on the Tabella app to help you enter into each devotion!

The Sacred Heart of Jesus: Love Wounded and Victorious

Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is all about drawing closer to Christ by meditating on the depths of His love — divine, human, and even sensible. It’s love that feels, that bleeds, and that longs for us.

While this devotion gained popularity in Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries, it was St. Gertrude the Great in the 13th century who lit a spark. That spark became a wildfire when St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a Visitation nun in the 1600s, received personal revelations from Jesus as she knelt before the Blessed Sacrament.

“He disclosed to me the marvels of his Love and the inexplicable secrets of his Sacred Heart.” – St. Margaret Mary

Jesus revealed 12 promises to those who honor His Sacred Heart — ranging from peace in their homes to the gift of final perseverance. Through frequent Communion, First Friday devotions, Holy Hours on Thursdays, and the Feast of the Sacred Heart itself (celebrated the Friday after Corpus Christi), the faithful are invited into a deeper, healing union with Christ.

The Immaculate Heart of Mary: Love that Triumphs over Sorrow

The very next day, we celebrate the Immaculate Heart of Mary — a reminder that behind every great King stands a great Queen.

Mary’s heart is pure, radiant, and fully united to the mission of Jesus. In his encyclical Haurietis Aquas, Pope Pius XII emphasized the deep connection between the hearts of Jesus and Mary. Her joys and sorrows pulsed in harmony with His Passion and triumph.

This unity is not just poetic — it’s powerful. At Fatima, Mary told the children, “My Immaculate Heart will triumph.” That promise gives us hope amid darkness, sin, and suffering. No matter how far we fall, Mary is close, helping us rise again.

Pope Benedict XVI called Mary the “model of perfect faith and contemplation.” Her Immaculate Heart reflects God’s own love and leads us — gently, faithfully — back to Jesus.

Why Two Feasts, One After the Other?

It’s not a coincidence that the Immaculate Heart of Mary follows immediately after the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Their hearts beat together in salvation history — and they invite us to sync our own hearts with theirs.

  • Jesus shows us how deeply we are loved.

  • Mary shows us how to respond to the love of Godwith total trust.

Ready to Go Deeper?

This June, take some time to honor both of these hearts. Whether you're at Adoration, driving to work, or sitting with your morning coffee, let prayer draw you in.
