Life of Priest

Imagine growing up in Germany, navigating the complexities of faith in a modern world, and ultimately saying yes to a vocation that takes you across the globe. Such is the story of Fr. Markus Stehmer, LC, a Legionary priest whose journey from secular Germany to the priesthood reflects a remarkable narrative of trust, surrender, and joy in Christ’s plan.
Early Life: A Seed Planted Amid Transition
Fr. Markus was born in Cologne, Germany, into a culturally Catholic family with roots in Luxembourg and Southern Germany. Faith, however, was not a defining element of his childhood—at least not initially. His parents, seeking truth and a deeper connection with God, went through their own spiritual journey, transitioning from fallen away Catholics and then later to evangelical protestants. A pivotal moment for Markus and his family came when his mother attended a pilgrimage to Medjugorje, bringing home a love for the Rosary that would later influence the entire family’s faith life. When Father was 7, he was baptized, and his whole family returned to the Catholic Church.
But like many teenagers, Fr. Markus faced periods of rebellion. He recalls his adolescent years as a time of resistance against a faith that felt, at times, overbearing. Still, God was quietly at work, preparing him for the seeds of conversion that would later blossom into a vocation.
The Turning Point: A Ski Trip to Grace
At 16, Fr. Markus he was invited to go on a ski trip with a Catholic apostolate in his town, purely out of a desire to hit the slopes and have a fun adventure. What he didn’t anticipate was an encounter with Christ in the Mass that would change the trajectory of his entire life. Celebrated with authenticity and reverence, this particular liturgy awakened him to the beauty and truth of the Eucharist.
“The Mass that day wasn’t just another obligation—it was alive,” he shared. “It became the moment where I realized what the Mass truly is.”
The priest leading the trip, Fr. Klaus, introduced him to a depth of faith he had never experienced. Conversations, formation talks, and witnessing the priest’s joy sparked questions in his heart: “Could I live this life? Is this what God is calling me to?”
Answering the Call: Overcoming Challenges in Formation
Discerning a vocation wasn’t an easy path for Fr. Markus. He grappled with doubts and feelings of inadequacy. Yet, through prayer and the guidance of spiritual directors, he embraced the call, entering the Legionaries of Christ in 2009. His journey of formation took him across Europe—from novitiate in Germany to humanistic studies in Salamanca, Spain, and theological studies in Rome.
Philadelphia: A New Mission Field
In 2023, Fr. Markus was ordained a priest at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. Shortly after, he received an assignment to serve in Philadelphia—a place he knew little about beyond its historical ties to the founding of the United States (and, of course, Rocky Balboa!). Today, he serves young adults as well as the Lumen Institute, where he supports Catholic businessmen in their spiritual lives.
When asked about whether or not he misses Germany and his family, Father replied resolutely “Yeah, certain places, certain people, of course, but—I'm a missionary priest. So I signed up for that. I want to do what the Lord wants from me. And he wants me right now to be here in the U.S. So this is my home now until he sends me somewhere else.”
Words of Encouragement for Discerners
Fr. Markus encourages anyone discerning their vocation to begin with prayer and trust. His practical advice?
Vocation is an Invitation: “Every single person has a vocation. Every single person. You are not an accident. You have a mission in life. And the Lord absolutely respects your personal freedom. He will never ever force you to do anything. Because he loves you and he respects your freedom. He invites you to a vocation and you are free to accept or not.”
Stay Close to Mary: Father reminds us that Mary is “our good Mother” who will all those who come to her closer to Jesus.
Sacraments and Prayer: “Daily Mass, Daily Rosary, and Bi-weekly Confession. And then also what I propose—One Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory every single day with the intention, Lord, I want to be open.”
Conclusion: Joy in Saying Yes
Fr. Markus’s journey is a testament to the power of God’s grace and the beauty of surrendering to His will. Whether you’re discerning the priesthood, religious life, or marriage, his story reminds us that our ultimate happiness lies in following God’s unique plan for our lives.
