A Saint for Our Times
In an age where misinformation and confusion about the faith abound, St. Cyril of Jerusalem stands as a beacon of truth. A Doctor of the Church, he devoted his life to teaching and preserving the integrity of Christian doctrine. His Catechetical Lectures, given to those preparing for baptism, remain some of the most influential early Christian teachings, helping us understand the richness of the Catholic faith.
His life was not without trials. St. Cyril faced persecution, exile, and opposition from heretical movements like Arianism, which denied the divinity of Christ. Despite these hardships, he never wavered in his commitment to defending the true faith. His legacy reminds us that knowledge of our beliefs is essential—not just for our own spiritual growth, but also to share the Gospel boldly with the world.
His feast day is celebrated on March 18, honoring his dedication to Christ and Holy Mother Church.
Faith Formation: A Lifelong Journey
As Catholics, we are called not only to believe but to understand our faith. Whether we were raised in the Church or came to it later in life, ongoing formation is essential to ongoing conversion.
St. Cyril challenges us: Have we truly deepened our understanding of the faith? Do we actively seek to learn and grow, or do we settle for a surface-level knowledge?
Here’s how we can follow his example today:
Commit to Learning – Read the Catechism, study the Bible, and listen to trusted Catholic theologians
Teach Others – Whether it’s sharing the faith with our children, volunteering with Youth Ministry and RCIA programs, or simply answering a friend’s question, we can all play a role in promulgating the truth of our Church.
Defend the Faith with Charity – Like St. Cyril, we will encounter misunderstandings and opposition. Our mission is to respond with love and clarity, always pointing others toward Christ.
Novena Prayer to St. Cyril of Jerusalem
Lord God, I thank You for the gift of St. Cyril of Jerusalem and his legacy in the Church. Help me to learn from his life how I can best serve You. St. Cyril, you were charged with the education and care of those seeking to come into the Church. You taught the faith with clarity and conviction, forming both minds and hearts. May I, too, seek to know the faith deeply and share it boldly. Pray that I may have the courage to proclaim the Gospel in both word and action. Intercede for me in my struggles, and hear the intention I now bring before you… (Pause to mention your prayer request.) Strengthen, O God, Your Church through the intercession of St. Cyril. May we enter more fully into Your Paschal Mystery and always remain faithful to Your truth. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
