Divine Mercy Sunday: A Celebration of God’s Endless Love

On the first Sunday after Easter, the Church celebrates Divine Mercy Sunday, a feast that radiates the boundless love and mercy of God. Rooted in the revelations of St. Faustina Kowalska, this day invites us to reflect on the depths of God’s mercy and His call for us to trust in His forgiveness and extend mercy to others.

What is Divine Mercy Sunday?

Divine Mercy Sunday was instituted by Pope John Paul II in 2000 during the canonization of St. Faustina. The feast springs from the visions and writings of St. Faustina, a Polish nun who recorded her mystical encounters with Jesus in her diary, now a book called Divine Mercy in My Soul.

In one vision, Jesus expressed His desire for this feast, saying:

"I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day, the very depths of My tender mercy are open. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment." (Diary, 699)

Divine Mercy Sunday reminds us that God’s mercy is available to all, no matter how great our sins. The celebration includes veneration of the Divine Mercy Image, recitation of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and an invitation to participate in the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist.

5 Powerful Quotes from St. Faustina’s Diary

  1. On God’s Endless Mercy:

"Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is greater than your sins and those of the entire world." (Diary, 699)

  2. On Trusting in Jesus:

"The graces of My mercy are drawn by means of one vessel only, and that is trust. The more a soul trusts, the more it will receive." (Diary, 1578)

  3. On the Eucharist:

"I desire to unite Myself with human souls; My great delight is to unite Myself with souls. Know, My daughter, that when I come to a human heart in Holy Communion, My hands are full of all kinds of graces which I want to give to the soul." (Diary, 1385)

  4. On the Sacrament of Confession:

"When you approach the confessional, know this, that I Myself am waiting there for you. I am only hidden by the priest, but I myself act in your soul." (Diary, 1602)

  5. On the Feast of Divine Mercy:

"On that day, all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me." (Diary, 699)
