On April 11, the Church honors the feast day of St. Gemma Galgani, a mystic, a victim soul, and a passionate lover of Christ. Known as the "Flower of Lucca," St. Gemma is a powerful reminder of how even in suffering, we can find profound intimacy with Jesus.
Born on March 12, 1878, in the small Italian town of Camigliano, St. Gemma showed early signs of a profound connection to God. Her life was marked by love and loss—losing her mother at the age of 7 and her father at 19. Despite these hardships, Gemma's faith only deepened, and she embraced her role as caregiver for her siblings.
Her love for Christ was extraordinary. She meditated deeply on His Passion, often spending hours in prayer before images of the Crucifixion. At just 21 years old, Gemma was graced with the stigmata, bearing the wounds of Christ in her body, a sign of her mystical union with Him.
Though she faced suffering and criticism, Gemma found her strength in the Most Holy Eucharist and her unwavering love for the Blessed Virgin Mary. She offered her life as a sacrifice for sinners, uniting her pains with Christ’s for the salvation of souls. Gemma passed away at the age of 25 on April 11, 1903, leaving behind a legacy of faith, humility, and love.
Five Powerful Quotes from St. Gemma Galgani
On Making Amends:
“I am Yours, oh Jesus. You have good reason to complain about me, yes, because I have offended You. And, undeserving as I am, I should be obliged to give back to the Altar so many stolen Breads, and so much precious Blood. But I promise You that I will make amends.”
On Longing for Heaven:
“I greatly rejoice that time flies so quickly, because that means so much less time to spend in this world, where there is nothing to attract me. My heart goes incessantly in search of a Treasure, an immense Treasure that I do not find in creatures; a Treasure that will satisfy me and console me, and give me rest.”
On Devotion to Mary:
“Oh, how I love my Mother! She knows it; and then Jesus Himself gave Her to me, and told me to love Her very much. What great kindness this Heavenly Mother has always shown me! What would have become of me, if I had not had Her? She has preserved me from countless dangers; She has taught me to know Him and to love Him.”
On Suffering and Love:
“If you really want to love Jesus, first learn to suffer, because suffering teaches you to love.”
On Christ’s Passion:
“Jesus, how is it that You permit Yourself to be insulted so much by me, Your ungrateful child? Yet, You have loved me so much as to die for me. How can I not love You?”
Prayer Written by St. Gemma to the Crucified Jesus
O My Crucified God, behold me at Your feet; do not cast me out, now that I appear before You as a sinner. I have offended You exceedingly in the past, my Jesus, but it shall be so no longer. Before You, O Lord, I place all my sins; I have now considered Your own sufferings and see how great is the worth of that Precious Blood that flows from Your veins. O my God, at this hour close Your eyes to my want of merit, and since You have been pleased to die for my sins, grant me forgiveness for them all...
A Prayer for St. Gemma’s Intercession
St. Gemma, patroness of students, pharmacists, and those suffering from temptations, we turn to you with faith. You bore the wounds of Christ with love and endured suffering with grace. Intercede for us, that we may grow in holiness and find strength in trials. Help us to imitate your humility, faith, and love for Jesus. Through your intercession, may we one day behold Him in eternal glory. Amen.
