Life of Priest

Jan 13, 2024

In this episode of Life of a Priest, we step into the international life of Father Jorge Ortiz, LC, a Legionary of Christ who currently serves as a formator for seminarians in Rome. From Mexico to Brazil, and now to Rome, Father Jorge’s journey is a testament to the universality of the Church and the unifying power of the Gospel.

From Mexico to the World

Father Jorge grew up in a devout Catholic family in Mexico, where faith was deeply woven into the fabric of his home. Though the idea of priesthood first came to him during preparation for his First Communion, it wasn’t until his college years that he seriously began discerning his vocation.

Despite feeling conflicted between a life in business or family and a call to serve the Church, a mission trip with the Legionaries of Christ clarified his purpose. Inspired by the example of a Legionary priest and the spiritual direction he received, Father Jorge embraced his call. “I realized God’s will is always the best for us,” he reflects.

A Missionary Heart

Since his ordination eight years ago, Father Jorge has served in various countries, adapting to new languages, cultures, and challenges. He began his priesthood as a school chaplain in Brazil, followed by parish ministry in Milan, where he worked with youth and managed the parish’s vibrant oratory space.

Currently, Father Jorge serves in Rome as a formator for seminarians from Africa, India, and Latin America. His work involves guiding these young men in their spiritual and pastoral formation, helping them prepare for the unique challenges of priestly life. “I enjoy the personal encounters,” he shares, “talking about their formation and their future.”

Lessons from Across Cultures

One of the most striking aspects of Father Jorge’s ministry is his exposure to the global Church.

“The Church expresses itself differently in each culture,” he says. “But the Gospel remains universal, touching hearts everywhere.”

This international perspective has enriched Father Jorge’s priesthood, helping him become a more empathetic and adaptable pastor. He believes his unique experiences have allowed him to serve and connect with people from all walks of life.

Facing Challenges with Faith

Like many during the pandemic, Father Jorge faced a time of deep reflection and solitude. The disruption of ministry and isolation tested his resolve but also strengthened his reliance on God.

“It was a time to focus on who I am as a priest,” he explains. “I learned that at the core, it’s about my relationship with God. Everything else flows from that.”

Through prayer, the Psalms, and the writings of St. Ignatius, Father Jorge found comfort and clarity. Now, he uses these lessons to guide seminarians in their own journeys, preparing them for the challenges of priestly life.

A Day in the Life

A typical day in the seminary is structured yet fulfilling. Father Jorge begins his mornings at 5:30 a.m. with prayer and Mass, followed by time for study and work. Afternoons are dedicated to accompanying seminarians and personal encounters, while evenings feature communal prayer, the Rosary, and adoration.

On Saturdays, seminarians enjoy leisure time to explore Rome or relax, and Sundays are reserved for serving and celebrating Mass as well as community activities.

Advice for Vocations

Father Jorge offers simple yet profound advice for anyone discerning a call to the priesthood:

  1. Make Time for Silence: “Silence is key. Step away from distractions and listen for God’s voice in your heart.”

  2. Stay Close to the Sacraments: Regular confession and communion provide the grace and clarity needed for discernment.

  3. Seek Guidance: A spiritual director or mentor can help provide perspective and wisdom.

A Universal Mission

Reflecting on his priesthood, Father Jorge sees his international ministry as a gift and a charism. “My priesthood has been fruitful across many continents,” he says. “It’s a privilege to serve the universal Church.”

Father Jorge’s story reminds us that the call to priesthood is not just about where you are—it’s about where God wants to take you. Whether serving in a bustling parish or a quiet seminary, the priesthood is a life of profound joy and purpose, rooted in the love of Christ.
