Father John Klein’s story begins in the heartland of America—St. Louis, Missouri—a city steeped in Catholic tradition. Growing up in a devout family, Father John’s early faith formation included prayer, Bible study, and weekly family rosaries, thanks to the loving persistence of his mother. Though middle school years presented the usual challenges of youthful distraction, the seeds of faith planted by his family would bear fruit in ways he couldn’t yet imagine.
As a high school student, Father John’s interests leaned toward music and adventure. He discovered a love for performing when he landed a lead role in the musical Meet Me in St. Louis. Around the same time, he picked up a guitar and began experimenting with classic rock and other genres. Music became a defining feature of his identity, and dreams of pursuing a career in the industry began to take shape. Yet, beneath the surface, there was a deeper calling waiting to unfold.
A Turning Point in College
Father John’s first two years at Truman State University were marked by the typical struggles of young adulthood: questions of identity, challenging relationships, and a spiritual drift. But an invitation to a retreat hosted by the campus Catholic center became a pivotal moment. On that retreat, he reconnected with the Sacraments, encountered Christ in adoration, and received powerful prayers of intercession from his older sister, who had been quietly praying for his return home to the Church.
This rekindling of faith spurred Father John to delve deeper into Catholicism. His second year of college was transformative—filled with daily Mass, adoration, and new friendships centered on shared faith. Yet, his heart remained restless. Longing for adventure and a meaningful life, he transferred to Middle Tennessee State University to study music production, a move that would set the stage for an extraordinary spiritual journey.
The Call to Surrender
It was during a period of loneliness and searching at Middle Tennessee that Father John had an unforgettable encounter with God. One evening, while sitting on a cliff overlooking a lake under a canopy of stars, he felt an overwhelming sense of God’s presence. “Do not be afraid,” the Lord seemed to whisper. “As beautiful as the stars are, I have a plan for your life that is even more magnificent.”
In that moment, Father John surrendered his plans and asked God to reveal His will. Soon after, the idea of the priesthood began to surface. Memories of a priest he had met during high school, a legionary of Christ, came rushing back. Inspired by the adventurous life of missionary priests, he began to discern his vocation more seriously.
Following God’s Plan
In 2006, Father John visited the Legionaries of Christ seminary during Holy Week, a trip that solidified his decision to enter formation. “I felt at home,” he recalled. “God had been preparing me for this all along.” A crumpled prayer card from his childhood, long forgotten on the family dining table, revealed a divine connection—bearing the logo of the Legionaries, it served as a tangible reminder that God had been guiding him all along.
Leaving behind his guitar and music career, Father John entered the seminary and embarked on a path of deep formation. Through years of study, prayer, and service, he grew in his understanding of the priesthood and its call to be a “man for others.”
Music and Mission: A Perfect Harmony
Today, as a priest serving at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Father John has found a beautiful way to integrate his love for music and his vocation. He leads Mercy Missions Atlanta, organizing street evangelization and outreach events that often feature music as a bridge to connect with others. During Advent, his team sings carols outside bars and restaurants, offering confessions and collecting prayer intentions.
Father John also spearheads the Regnum Christi Music Collective, a group that records uplifting, faith-centered music. Returning to Nashville each year, he brings together young Catholic musicians to create songs that inspire and evangelize. Whether on campus, in the streets, or in the studio, his ministry is fueled by the same adventurous spirit that first drew him to God’s call.
A Life Fully Given
Father John Klein’s journey is a testament to God’s transformative power and His ability to use our talents for His greater glory. From the musical stages of high school to the seminaries of the Legionaries of Christ, and now to the streets of Atlanta, Father John has embraced the adventure of priesthood with joy and trust in God’s plan.
