Who Was Pier Giorgio Frassati?
Born in 1901 in Turin, Italy, Pier Giorgio was raised in a wealthy, influential family. But unlike many of his peers, he didn’t chase status or comfort. Instead, he climbed mountains (literally!) and spent his time in the slums serving the sick, the hungry, and the forgotten. He joined Catholic Action, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and was never afraid to stand up for the Church and its teachings—even when it meant going against popular opinion.
His life motto? Verso l’Alto—“to the heights.” Not just of the Alps, which he loved to climb, but to the heights of holiness.
His Death... and His Legacy
At just 24, Pier Giorgio contracted polio, likely from one of the many poor he served, and died shortly after. His funeral was packed—not with high society, but with the poor and needy he had quietly helped.
And now, 100 years later, Pier Giorgio Frassati is about to become Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati! Pope Leo XIV has announced that his canonization will take place in Rome, between on September 7th alongside Carlo Acutis.
