But Father Jason Wooleyhan’s story reminds us that every priest is unique, blending their spiritual vocation with the diverse interests and talents God has given them. From his work as a professor in the school of business to his surprising hobby of practicing jiu-jitsu, Father Jason exemplifies the dynamic and multifaceted life of a priest.

From Pittsburgh to Priesthood

Raised in a devout Catholic family, Father Jason grew up with Sunday Mass as a non-negotiable. His parents provided a strong foundation of faith, work ethic, and intellectual curiosity. His mother, a trailblazer in business analytics before it was even a defined field, and his father, a technical editor, instilled in him a love for learning and a sense of responsibility.

Although he thrived academically and socially, there was always a deeper question stirring within him about purpose and direction.

Conversion and Call During College

While studying mathematics and statistics at Penn State, Father Jason experienced a spiritual awakening. Though he grew up Catholic, it wasn’t until his college years that he began to take his faith seriously. Through encounters with adoration, prayer groups, and Catholic campus ministry, he encountered Christ in a transformative way.

“I finally realized what it meant to be loved by God,” Father Jason recalls. “Once you experience that, there’s no turning back.”

Even with this renewed faith, the idea of priesthood felt distant and daunting. After graduating, he pursued a career with the Department of Defense in Washington, D.C., enjoying the independence and stability of a well-paying job. But as he spent more time in prayer, the tug toward priesthood became undeniable.

Meeting the Franciscans

While living in Washington, Father Jason met the Franciscan Friars, Third Order Regular, through a young adult prayer group they hosted. Their spirituality and community life resonated with him deeply. “Joining the Franciscans was like meeting the person you love,” he explains. “It just made sense.”

At 24, Father Jason entered the order as a postulant. His years of formation were filled with growth, challenges, and ultimately, the joy of fully embracing his vocation.

A Life of Teaching and Ministry

Today, Father Jason teaches full-time at St. Francis University, blending his love for statistics, business and account with his call to serve the Kingdom of God. His current pursuit of a Doctorate in Business Administration reflects his passion for integrating faith and intellect.

“What I teach is more than numbers and analysis,” he shares. “It’s about helping students see how their work can serve others and build a better world.”

A Priest with a Passion for Learning—and Jiu-Jitsu

When Father Jason isn’t in the classroom or celebrating Mass, you might find him on his bike, exploring the Pennsylvania countryside, or even practicing jiu-jitsu.

“Joining a jiu-jitsu gym was an unexpected but rewarding experience,” he says with a laugh. “It’s a great way to stay active, and it’s also a reminder that priests are human. We have hobbies and interests just like everyone else.”

Father Jason’s ability to balance the spiritual, intellectual, and physical aspects of his life is a testament to the holistic nature of the Catholic faith.
