Life as a priest often means embarking on journeys full of surprises, challenges, and extraordinary moments of grace. For Fr. Jesús Salinas, LC, his path has taken him from the bustling streets of Mexico City to the heart of Cincinnati, Ohio. A Legionary of Christ priest with a passion for evangelizing families and youth, Fr. Jesús’s story is one of trust, the power of community, and a strong devotion to the Holy Family.
A Calling Discovered Early
Born and raised in Mexico City—a sprawling metropolis of over 30 million people—Fr. Jesús first encountered the Legionaries of Christ at his school, Instituto Cumbres. Their joyful witness planted seeds of vocation in his heart. “Even in high school, I felt a strong attraction to the priesthood,” he shared. By age 18, he was ready to take the leap, entering the Legionary novitiate in Connecticut.
From there, his priestly formation led him across the globe: from philosophy studies in New York, to a formative apostolic internship in Indiana and California, and finally to theology studies in Rome.
Trusting God in the Face of Challenges
While formation brought many joys, there were also moments of doubt. “There were times I thought, ‘I’m not good enough for this,’” Fr. Jesús admitted. But a pivotal moment during his time in Rome reaffirmed his trust in God’s plan. A fellow seminarian, sensing his struggle, left a holy card featuring an image of the Child Jesus, with the word “trust” written on the back.
“That small gesture reminded me that this isn’t about me—it’s about God’s grace working through me,” Fr. Jesús reflected. “He chooses us, equips us, and gives us the strength to say yes.”
Life as a School Chaplain
Now five years into his priesthood, Fr. Jesús serves as chaplain at Royalmont Academy in Cincinnati, a role that he embraces with joy and enthusiasm. His days begin in prayer with the school staff and are filled with opportunities to connect with students, parents, and faculty.
“My favorite part of the day is greeting each student in the morning,” he shared. “It’s a chance to show them they are loved and valued.”
Mass, spiritual coaching sessions, and confessions are central to his ministry, but he also prioritizes being present in less formal settings. “Whether it’s joining the students at recess or riding my electric scooter on First Fridays, I want them to see that faith is alive and joyful,” he said with a smile.
Strength in Community
As a Legionary, Fr. Jesús finds great joy in the community life of his order. “Living in community is a gift,” he explained. “It’s like having a family who supports you in your vocation and helps you grow in holiness.”
But he also emphasizes the importance of community for everyone, not just religious. “We were made for relationships,” he said. “Isolation can lead to struggles, but surrounding ourselves with holy friendships and a strong support system can make all the difference.”
Encouraging Families to Live the Gospel
One of Fr. Jesús’s favorite ministries is consecrating families to the Holy Family. Using a simple seven-day preparation booklet, he helps families deepen their prayer life and grow in unity. “Families are under attack in today’s world,” he noted. “But when a family entrusts themselves to Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, they are strengthened to live out their faith boldly.”
Advice for Discerners
For those discerning a vocation to the priesthood, Fr. Jesús echoes the words of St. John Paul II: “Do not be afraid.” He likens saying yes to God’s call to jumping off a cliff while paragliding—a leap of faith that ultimately leads to breathtaking beauty.
“When we trust God and take that leap, He carries us,” he said. “We’re not alone. He’s with us every step of the way.”
A Final Word
Fr. Jesús’s life is a testament to the power of trusting God and embracing the mission He sets before us. Whether he’s guiding students, praying with families, or simply riding his scooter, his joy is unmistakable.
“Priesthood is an adventure,” he said. “And with God leading the way, it’s the most fulfilling adventure you could ever imagine.”
