Fr. Robbie Cotta: The Prodigal became a Priest

Fr. Robbie Cotta’s journey to the priesthood might surprise you. From a self-described “rowdy” college life to discerning a vocation after a single, pivotal Mass, Fr. Robbie’s story is one of God’s patience, persistence, and particular love. Now a priest of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, he shares how his past shaped his ministry and why he believes every “yes” to God deepens the meaning of life.

Growing Up in Faith and Family

Born and raised in Johns Creek, Georgia, Fr. Robbie grew up in a Catholic home where the faith was a non-negotiable. His mother led the family in prayer and Sunday Mass attendance, while his father, a convert to Catholicism, modeled a sacrificial and present fatherhood. “I didn’t realize until later how blessed I was to have a stable, faith-filled home,” Fr. Robbie reflects.

From an early age, Fr. Robbie felt drawn to the altar—not as a priest at first, but as an altar server. “I couldn’t wait to serve. I begged my mom to ask our pastor if I could start early,” he recalls. That eagerness to assist at Mass planted seeds of vocation, giving him a close-up view of the mystery of the Eucharist and the beauty of the priesthood.

Detours and Discovery

After high school, Fr. Robbie’s path took an unexpected turn. Pursuing a degree in broadcast journalism at Georgia Southern University, he found success in his studies and internships but drifted from practicing his faith. “I wasn’t rejecting Catholicism—I still believed—but I was living a typical college lifestyle, and I wasn’t ready to confront the moral conflicts that came with it,” he shares.

Despite stepping away from regular Mass attendance, God was still at work in Fr. Robbie’s life. Experiences in broadcasting and sports media gave him skills in communication and storytelling, tools that he now uses daily as a priest. Even a chance interview for a student project connected him with a prominent priest Father Brett Bannen—author of “To Save a Thousand Souls” one of the most popular books written about discernment of the priesthood—though he didn’t recognize its significance at the time.

A Call He Couldn’t Ignore

The turning point came when a friend invited Fr. Robbie to his first Mass as a newly ordained priest. Though initially hesitant to attend, Fr. Robbie went—and was moved to tears. “It was like the Lord was saying, ‘This is who I made you to be. Now is the time to say yes.’”

That moment marked the beginning of a profound discernment process. With the guidance of supportive friends, a vocation director, and a renewed prayer life, Fr. Robbie rediscovered his call to the priesthood. By 2014, he had entered seminary, embarking on the path to priesthood with a newfound clarity and purpose.

Lessons for Discerning Souls

Now in his third year as a priest, Fr. Robbie serves as chaplain at St. Pius X Catholic High School in Atlanta. Drawing on his own experiences, he offers encouragement to those discerning their vocation:

1. Pay Attention to Attraction

   “A vocation often begins with an attraction. If you feel drawn to the priesthood or religious life, don’t ignore it. Talk to a priest or vocation director, and trust the process.”

2. God Uses Everything

   “Even the times when I was far from the Church, God used those experiences to form me into the priest I am today. Your past isn’t wasted—God can use anything for His glory.”

3. Say Yes Without Fear

   Quoting St. John Paul II, Fr. Robbie reminds us: “Do not be afraid.” A life given to Christ may come with challenges, but it is also rich with joy, meaning, and grace.

The Beauty of the Priesthood

Fr. Robbie describes his life as a priest as profoundly meaningful, even in its difficulties. “There are heavy moments, like walking with people through tragedies, but there are also incredible joys. Saying yes to Christ has made my life deeper and more beautiful than I ever imagined.”

For Fr. Robbie, the priesthood isn’t just about serving—it’s about loving. “As a priest, I’m called to love the Church as my bride. That love drives everything I do, from celebrating the sacraments to being present for my students at school.”
